My community, Port Washington, New York, is going off the grid according to a report by Newsday (behind paywall here). What this means is that the community will be moving toward the development of a microgrid that will eliminate reliance on external power sources.

This development comes after much contention in the area after Superstorm Sandy knocked out the main grid to the community. Many homes and businesses were without power for days. If the plan moves forward, the new smaller power stations will be located at several locations around town including the main library.

The development of microgrids is one of the recommended energy strategies that planners hope will lead to greater local resilience.
